2-10 Unit History

10th Aviation Regiment was constituted 21 September 1965 in the Regular Army as Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 10th Aviation Battalion. The battalion was activated 23 August 1965 at Fort Benning, Georgia and re-designated as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 10th Aviation Battalion on 1 December 1968. 10th Aviation was inactivated 30 December 1980 at Fort Lewis, Washington and with the exception of a brief activation in the 1st Armored Division in Germany, was not reactivated until 1988.

In 1988, the unit was given its current designation of the 10th Aviation Regiment, a parent regiment under the United States Army Regimental System. The 10th Aviation Regiment was reactivated on 7 March 1996 at Fort Drum, New York as part of the 10th Mountain Division’s 10th Aviation Brigade.

10th Aviation was an important contributor to the United States Army’s efforts in Vietnam. The unit provided critical aviation support in the first Tet counteroffensive and distinguished itself by successfully fulfilling this vital role. 10th Aviation regularly repeated this standard of success in the intervening years and was recognized for valorous actions at Dak To and Tuy Hao Valley. By the end of its service in Vietnam, the unit had received two meritorious unit commendations (Army) and five awards for gallantry from the Republic of South Vietnam.

The 2nd Battalion (Assault), 10th Aviation Regiment, “Soldiers of the Sky,” was activated at Fort Drum, New York on 16 March 1996 as it was redesignated from the 3rd Battalion (Assault), 25th Aviation Regiment.

Since its activation, the battalion has remained busy. The first operational mission as the 2nd Battalion (Assault), 10th Aviation Regiment was a JTF-6 counter-drug mission in El Centro, California from January 1999 to February 1999. Bravo Company deployed to support that counter-drug mission. Locally, the battalion assisted the New York region as it recovered from the devastating effects of the January 1998 ice storm. In May 1999, elements of Charlie Company deployed to Albania and were attached to Task Force Hawk to support Operation Allied Forge and Operation Shining Hope peace-keeping operations in Kosovo. In August 1999, Charlie Company redeployed to Bosnia and joined Alpha Company as part of Task Force Eagle to support SFOR-6, Operation Joint Forge, a peace-keeping mission in Bosnia from August 1999 to March 2000. Charlie Company deployed aircraft and crews on a JTF-6 counter-drug mission at Cape Girardeau, Missouri from August 2000 to September 2000.

Recently, the battalion supported the Global War on Terrorism in both Afghanistan and Iraq. HHC, Bravo, Charlie, and Delta Companies deployed to Afghanistan in July 2003, conducting combat operations to eliminate the remaining terrorist elements in the region. Alpha Company deployed to Iraq in December 2003 as Coalition forces continued the fight to bring stability and order in the wake of the ousting of Sadam Hussein.

Once again in 2006, all companies deployed to Afghanistan in support of OEF VII, they once again conducted combat operations against remaining terrorist, and assisted in bringing stability to the region as part of the International Security Assistance Force.

Today, the 2nd Battalion (Assault), 10th Aviation Regiment stands ready to deploy anywhere in the world to defend freedom, liberty, and democracy.
