1st BSTB Commander


  Lieutenant James M. Depolo, Jr.

LTC Mike DePolo attended college at the Citadel in Charleston, SC where he was commissioned as an Engineer Officer in 1995.  Following his commissioning, he was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division at Ft. Campbell, KY from 1996 to 1999, where he served as a Combat Engineer Platoon Leader, Company Executive Officer and Engineer Plans Officer.  Following completion of the Engineer Officer’s Advanced Course, he attended the Special Forces Selection and Qualification Course and was then assigned to the 7th Special Forces Group at Ft. Bragg, NC.  While assigned to the 7th Special Forces Group from 2000-2005, he served as the Detachment Commander for ODA 765, Company Executive Officer for Company C, 2nd Battalion, Assistant Operations Officer for 2nd Battalion and Detachment Commander for ODA 793.  Following his tenure in the 7th Special Forces Group, he served at Camp Mackall from 2005-2006 as a Cadre Team Leader and Executive Officer for Company D,  1st  Bn, 1st Special Warfare Training Group, (Robin Sage).  Following attendance at the Command and General Staff College, he returned to the 7th Special Forces Group where he served as a Company Commander and Battalion Operations Officer from 2007 to 2010.  From 2011 to 2013, LTC DePolo served as a SOF and Small Group Instructor at the Command and General Staff College at Ft. Leavenworth, KS.  LTC DePolo has two deployments to Afghanistan as a Commander of a Special Forces Operational Detachment-Alpha and a Special Forces Company Commander, and eight deployments to South and Central America in support of contingencies or other operations.

LTC DePolo’s military and civilian education includes the U.S. Army Engineer Officer’s Basic and Advanced Courses, The Command and General Staff College, The U.S. Army Airborne and Jumpmaster Courses, The Air Assault Course, Ranger School, The Jungle Warfare Course, The Sapper Leader’s Course, The Survival Evasion Resistance and Escape (SERE) Course, The Special Forces Qualification Course, The Individual Terror Awareness Course, The Basic Instructor Course , The Joint Planner Course, CAS3, The Special Forces Advanced Urban Combat Course (SFAUCC) and the Special Forces Advanced Reconnaissance, Target Analysis and Exploitation Course (SFARTAEC).  He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from the Citadel and a Master’s Degree in Management from Webster University.

His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal with oak leaf cluster, the Meritorious Service Medal with 3 oak leaf clusters, The Army Commendation Medal with “V” device and 3 oak leaf clusters, the Joint Service Achievement Medal with oak leaf cluster, the Army Achievement Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Air Assault Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, the Sapper Tab, Ranger Tab, Special Forces Tab and Parachutist and Jumpmaster Wings from various countries.
