KANDAHAR, Afghanistan – Afghan National Security Forces, in partnership with International Security Assistance Forces, discovered a major weapons cache May 3 in Arghandab District.

Acting on intelligence from a local resident, the joint security forces secured the location and investigated the cache find.

Weapons seized in the cache included: 70 rocket-propelled grenades, 13 RPG primers, 24 RPG boosters, two 82 mm recoilless rifle rounds, a recoilless rifle mount, two machine gun barrels, seven boxes of machine gun ammunition and components of bomb-making materials.

“This find is a major blow to the anticipated Taliban offense in the Arghandab River Valley,” said Maj. Andy Gilliand, executive officer, 3rd Squadron, 71st Cavalry Regiment, currently attached to 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division. “It is a positive reinforcement to residents that the Afghan security forces and their U.S. partners are continuing to pursue the Taliban in order to provide them a safe and secure environment.”

Pye is assigned to 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division Public Affairs Office.
