The Fort Drum Fire and Emergency Services has issued a fire danger rating of moderate (green) for this week.
Fire will start from most accidental causes, but except for lightning fires in some areas, the number of starts is generally low. Fires in open cured grasslands will burn briskly and spread rapidly on windy days. Timber fires spread slowly to moderately fast. The average fire is of moderate intensity, although heavy concentrations of fuel may burn hot. Short distance spotting may occur. Fires are not likely to become serious, and control is relatively easy.
These restrictions apply during moderate fire danger rating:
- Open fires in the cantonment area are prohibited.
- In training areas, open fires must meet specific guidelines.
- Using smoke grenades, flares and simulators is extremely hazardous and easily starts wood and grass fires, even after it rains. Individuals must exercise special precautions and may not use them in areas of highly flammable grass and leaves. Areas must be cleared for their use, and individuals must watch all devices to ensure they burn out.
- Individuals may not burn trash, debris, leaves, pine needles or grass or burn off any area. Individuals must extinguish matches, cigarettes, cigars and ashes before disposing of them.
