Battalions welcome new leaders


Soldiers of 10th Mountain Division (LI) welcomed new battalion leaders during change of command and change of responsibility ceremonies held earlier this month at Fort Drum.
Lt. Col Robert M. Ryan relinquished command of 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, to Lt. Col. Roland H. Dicks during a ceremony June 5 at the Magrath Sports Complex.
Ryan, who commanded the Polar Bears since October 2010, will become the brigade deputy commanding officer.
Dicks most recently served as aide-de-camp to the commander of Allied Joint Force Command Naples-NATO, commander of U.S. Naval Forces Europe, and commander of U.S. Naval Forces Africa, in Naples, Italy.
Col. John G. Clement relinquished command of 2nd Battalion, 15th Field Artillery Battalion, 2nd BCT, to Lt. Col. Christopher W. Wendland during a ceremony June 6.
Clement’s next assignment will take him to Joint Base Lewis McChord, Wash.
Wendland comes to Fort Drum after serving with U.S. Pacific Command’s J3 Operations Directorate.
Lt. Col. David L. Sanders III relinquished command of 1st Squadron, 89th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd BCT, to Lt. Col. Robert F. Griggs during a ceremony June 12.
Sanders’ next assignment will take him to the U.S. Army War College, Carlisle Barracks, Pa.
Griggs most recently served as deputy chief of future operations at U.S. Army Central.
Command Sgt. Maj. Carl Ashmead relinquished responsibility as senior enlisted adviser for 2nd Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, to Command Sgt. Maj. James E. Wafe Jr. during a ceremony June 15.
Ashmead’s next assignment will take him to Camp Casey, Korea.
Wafe comes to Fort Drum from Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.
Lt. Col. David R. Kramer relinquished command of 1st Battalion, 10th Aviation Regiment, Task Force Tigersharks, to Lt. Col. Chad E. Ward during a ceremony June 19 at Wheeler-Sack Army Airfield.
Kramer has orders to Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif., where he will serve in the Joint Space Operations Center, 14th Air Force (Flying Tigers), U.S. Strategic Command.
Ward previously served at U.S. Army Human Resources Command at Fort Knox, Ky., as the Aviation Branch executive officer and lieutenant colonel’s assignment officer.
Lt. Col. Erick “Zeke” Sweet assumed command of 6th Squad-ron, 6th Cavalry Regiment, Task Force Six Shooters, during an assumption of command ceremony June 19 at Wheeler-Sack Army Airfield.
Sweet previously served as 10th Combat Aviation Brigade rear detachment commander during the unit’s most recent deployment to Afghanistan.
Command Sgt. Maj. Benny Dobbs relinquished responsibility as senior enlisted adviser for 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, to Command Sgt. Maj. James Stallworth during a ceremony June 20.
Dobbs’ next assignment will take him to Fort Polk, La.
Stallworth comes to Fort Drum from Fort Benning, Ga.
Lt. Col. Rhett Cox relinquished command of 2nd Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 2nd BCT, to Lt. Col. Jason T. Briggs during a ceremony Tuesday.
Cox will next serve as inspector general at Fort Drum.
Briggs most recently served with the National Military Command Center on Joint Staff at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.
