Fort Drum Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers program leaders have announced new officers as well as plans for the coming year.
Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers, or BOSS, is a program that has supported the overall quality of life for single Soldiers, geographical bachelors and single parents since the program’s inception in 1989.
Fort Drum’s BOSS program strives to provide the same support and opportunities to Soldiers in the North Country.
Some of its most recent activities here include the BOSS Custom Car and Motorcycle Show at Mountainfest, facilitating volunteer camp buddies for the Exceptional Family Member Program Summer Camp, and presenting the BOSS 5K Zombie Run.
Fort Drum BOSS also is proud to have opened a second BOSS Center on post at the Jack T. Sweet Complex featuring recreation opportunities for troops in the past year.
The offices of BOSS president and vice president are one-year appointments made by a committee that includes senior leaders. The appointment process begins with Soldiers dedicated to developing and overseeing the BOSS Program.
Those Soldiers submit resumes and cover letters indicating in which office they would like to serve.
This year’s BOSS appointment committee included Command Sgt. Maj. Rick Merritt, 10th Mountain Division senior enlisted adviser; Command Sgt. Maj. Mark Oldroyd, Fort Drum Garrison senior enlisted adviser; outgoing BOSS President Sgt. Brad Johnson; and Michelle Roden, BOSS Family and MWR adviser.
After interviewing each applicant, committee members met and made their selections. The 2013 Fort Drum BOSS president is Sgt. Francisco Bernardino, and Sgt. Douglas Winter was selected to serve at this year’s vice president.
Bernardino, who is originally from Mexico, currently serves with 1st Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team. Bernardino said he has always supported and has been inspired by the BOSS program. He said his motivation for applying for Fort Drum BOSS president is because he wanted to be a bigger part of the program.
Winter, from Pleasanton, Calif., serves with 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team.
Winter has been very active in the BOSS program. In addition to serving as his company BOSS representative for the past three years, Winter served as his battalion BOSS representative for one year and brigade BOSS representative for six months.
Winter also served as Fort Drum’s acting BOSS vice president for one week.
Plans for the coming year are in the works, such as trips to events and activities off post, community projects, gaming tournaments, Fort Drum BOSS Conference and a followup to the highly successful Zombie 5K Fun Run in October.
