Fort Drum will host Youth Fishing Derby, fishing free for all

As part of a state-sponsored program, Fort Drum officials invite anglers to fish free of charge Saturday in all open recreational areas on post.
A New York state fishing license will not be required to fish on the installation Saturday. Only a Fort Drum recreational access pass is required.
This pass can be obtained free of charge online at Fort Drum’s Fish and Wildlife Management website at www.FortDrum.isportsman.net. Check-in for fishing in the training areas is still required; anglers must call the Sportsmen’s Hotline at 772-7153.
No Fort Drum recreational access pass is required to fish on Remington Pond.
“Since no license is required, it’s the perfect occasion to introduce a child to the sport, renew one’s own interest, or take a friend or relative fishing,” said Raymond Rainbolt, Fort Drum fish and wildlife manager.
“This is also a great opportunity for those who are new to Fort Drum to experience the angling opportunities that are offered here on post.”
The free fishing day is sponsored in part by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, in coordination with Fort Drum’s Fish and Wildlife Management Program.

Youth Fishing Derby
Fort Drum’s free fishing day also coincides with the 18th Annual Youth Fishing Derby at Remington Park.
The fishing derby is open to children 18 and younger. Registration begins at 11:45 a.m.; the derby will begin at noon and conclude at 3:45 p.m., followed by an awards presentation at 4 p.m. There is no charge for the event.
Prizes will be awarded for the longest and most fish caught in each of three age categories. A casting contest also will be conducted, with prizes given to the longest cast in each of four age categories.
Anglers are reminded that a catch-and-release policy exists on Remington Pond.
Complimentary angling bro-chures, regulations and maps are available 24/7 in the kiosk outside the Natural Resources Permit Office in Bldg. 2509 off of state Route 26.
For those individuals who need equipment, fishing gear is always available for rent and bait available for purchase at Outdoor Recreation, 11115 Iraqi Freedom Drive.
For additional information about the Youth Fishing Derby, see the Fort Drum Fish and Wildlife Management Program website at www.FortDrum.iSportsman.net or call 772-9636 or 772-6283. o
