MASSENA – The New York Power Authority’s Frank S. McCullough Jr. Hawkins Point Visitors Center and Boat Launch now offers expanded summer hours.
The admission-free visitors center, part of NYPA’s St. Lawrence-Franklin D. Roosevelt Power Project, is now open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week.
The visitors center offers many hands-on exhibits on electricity, energy, the environment and area history. Visitors can hop aboard a bicycle generator and turn pedal power into electricity or have a hair-raising experience with static electricity using the Van de Graaff generator.
An audio-visual terrain map charts the course of the mighty St. Lawrence River from Ogdensburg to Massena. Visitors also can enjoy panoramic views of the project’s power dam. A community room is also available for public use.
Last year, NYPA welcomed more than 22,000 visitors to the Hawkins Point facility.
