Fort Drum, NY - A 10th Mountain Division Soldier stationed at Fort Polk, Louisiana, was killed Saturday, July 9, in Logar Province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with a rocket propelled grenade.
Killed is Sergeant Christopher P. Soderlund, age 23, of Pineville, Louisiana. He was an infantryman with the 2nd Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division.
Soderlund joined the Army in March 2006. After training at Fort Benning, Georgia, he was stationed at Fort Irwin, California. He arrived at Fort Polk, Louisiana in November 2007. Soderlund deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from December 2007 to January 2009. He deployed with his unit in October 2010 to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Soderlund's awards and decorations include the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Army Commendation Medal, the Valorous Unit Award, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal,
the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Non-commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the NATO Medal and the Combat Infantryman Badge.
Soderlund is survived by his wife, two children, mother, father and step-father.
