A 10th Mountain Division Soldier has died after contracting rabies

Fort Drum, NY - A 10th Mountain Division Soldier assigned to the Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, has died after contracting rabies.

 

Specialist Kevin R. Shumaker, age 24, of Livermore, California, died in a stateside hospital, Wednesday, August 31.

 

Shumaker joined the Army in February 2009.  After completing training he was stationed at Grafenwoehr, Germany in August 2009.  He deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom with the 615th Military Police Company as a cook from May 2010 to May 2011.  He

came to Fort Drum in August 2011.

 

Shumaker's awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the NATO Medal, the Army Service Ribbon and Overseas Service Ribbon.

 

Shumaker is survived by his mother and stepfather.

 

The circumstances surrounding how and where the Soldier contracted the illness remains under investigation.  It has been determined the Soldier did not contract rabies in New York State.
