10th Mountain Division Soldiers killed in Afghanistan

 

Fort Drum, NY - Two 10th Mountain Division Soldiers were killed Wednesday, September 8, in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan, when their unit was attacked with an improvised explosive device.

 

Killed were:

Specialist Koran P. Contreras, age 21, of Lawndale, California. He was an Infantryman with the 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division.

 

Contreras joined the Army in April 2008. After training at Fort Benning, Georgia he was assigned to Fort Hood, Texas and arrived at Fort Drum in April 2010. Contreras previously deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from January 2009 to December 2009. He deployed with his unit to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in March 2011.

 

Contreras' awards and decorations include the Purple Heart, the Army Commendation Medal, the Meritorious Unit Commendation, the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon the NATO Medal and the Combat Infantryman Badge.

 

Contreras is survived by his wife and mother.

Private First Class Douglas J. Jeffries, Jr., age 20, of Springville, California. He was an Infantryman with the 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division.

 

Jeffries joined the Army in November 2009. After training at Fort Benning, Georgia, he was arrived at Fort Drum in March 2010.  He deployed with his unit to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in March 2011.

 

Jeffries' awards and decorations include the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon and the NATO Medal.

 

Jeffries is survived by his mother, father and step-mother.
