10th Mountain Division Soldier killed in Afghanistan 


Fort Drum, NY - A 10th Mountain Division Soldier was killed in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan, Friday, August 5, when insurgents attacked his unit with a rocket propelled grenade. 


Killed is Specialist Mark J. Downer, age 23, of Warner Robins, Georgia. 


Downer was a combat medic with the 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team.  Downer joined the Army in December 2009.  After training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma and Fort Sam Houston, Texas, he came to Fort Drum in June 2010.  He deployed with his unit in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in March 2011. 


Downer's awards and decorations include the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the NATO Medal, and the Combat Medic Badge. 


Downer is survived by his child, mother and father.
