10th Mountain Division Soldier killed in Afghanistan

 

Fort Drum, NY - A 10th Mountain Division Soldier was killed in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan, Wednesday, August 24, when insurgents attacked his unit with small arms fire.

 

Killed is SGT Andrew R. Tobin, age 24, of Jacksonville, Illinois.

 

Tobin was an infantryman with the 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team.  Tobin joined the Army in January 2008, and after completing training came to Fort Drum in June 2008.  Tobin had previously deployed to Afghanistan from January to December 2009.  He deployed with his unit again in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in March 2011.

 

Tobin's awards and decorations include the Army Achievement Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Development

Ribbon, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the NATO Medal, two Certificates of Achievement, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Air Assault Badge, the Marksmanship Qualification Badge - Sharpshooter with Machinegun and the Marksmanship Qualification Badge - Sharpshooter with Pistol.

 

Tobin is survived by his wife, mother and father.
