Fort Drum avoids previously announced closure of Memorial Child Development Center

Fort Drum, NY - The Memorial Child Development Center (CDC), which provides Part Time Day Care for toddler and preschool age children and hourly day care for children ages 6 weeks - 5 years, will remain open with minimal degradation of services despite the current staffing shortages.

To accommodate the continued operation of the Memorial CDC there will be changes/reduced services in child care, Youth Sports and SKIES Unlimited (instructional) programs, which are also offered by Fort Drum's FMWR Child, Youth and School Services Division.  The changes/reductions allow the

reallocation of some of the Youth Sports and SKIES Unlimited program employees to the CDC programs until additional staff can be hired and trained.

The Memorial Child Development Center will temporarily reduce the 74 hourly care spaces currently available to 52 spaces beginning February 11th; part time care enrollments will be reduced from 57 to 50, also effective beginning February 11th. The affected parents in the part time toddler

program will have access to both hourly care and Family Child Care (in-home, on post child care providers) until the staffing allows the restoration of the reduced spaces.

SKIES is an acronym for "School of Knowledge, Inspiration, Exploration, and Skills". SKIES provides instructional programs such as gymnastics, arts and crafts and music for children and youth ranging from 3 years to adolescence.

The following SKIES program will continue: Taekwondo classes, Sew Kool Sewing Club, Kids in the Kitchen, Kids in Motion, Creative Movement Dance, and Skiing/Snowboarding programs.  Beginning February 11th, the following programs will be postponed until further notice: Art, Theater, and Music

classes.

The Youth Sports and Fitness program offers baseball, T-ball, football, soccer, basketball, lacrosse, cheerleading, and golf.  Programs are available for children 3 years and older.  Changes to current levels of service will not affect the core programs, but will affect programs provided in-house to our CDCs.

The process of interviewing, hiring, and mandatory training required for our child care providers prior to entering the classroom should return to adequate staffing by mid April, which will allow Fort Drum to return to the current levels of service in all CYSS programs. Fort Drum will continue to

update information on the availability of these services as it becomes available.
