FORT DRUM – A Soldier assigned to the 10th Mountain Division's 2nd Brigade Combat Team was killed near Rushdi Mullah, Iraq July 17 when he was hit by enemy small arms fire while preparing to enter a helicopter.
Sgt. Nathan S. Barnes, 23, was an infantryman assigned to Company C, 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment.
Originally from American Fork, Utah, Barnes entered the Army in April 2004. Following basic and advanced individual training at Fort Benning, Ga., he completed the Basic Airborne Course, also at Fort Benning.
He was first assigned to 1st Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment based at Fort Richardson, Alaska, in September 2004. He was reassigned to Fort Drum in July 2005.
Barnes deployed with his unit to Iraq in August 2006.
He is a graduate of the Combat Life Saver Course.
His awards and decorations include the Purple Heart, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Combat Infantryman Badge and the Parachutist Badge.
