10th Mountain Division Soldier killed in Afghanistan

 

Fort Drum, NY - A 10th Mountain Division Soldier stationed at Fort Polk, Louisiana, died June 25 at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Landstuhl, Germany, of injuries sustained on June 22 when insurgents attacked his unit using small arms fire in Kherwar, Afghanistan. 

  

Killed is Specialist Nicholas P. Bernier, age 21, of East Kingston, New Hampshire.

 

He was a combat medic with the 2nd Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division.

Bernier joined the Army in March 2008.  After training at Fort Benning, Georgia, he was assigned to Fort Sam Houston, Texas in May 2008. He arrived at Fort Polk, Louisiana in April 2010 and deployed with his unit in October 2010 to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

 

Bernier's awards and decorations include the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Army Achievement Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the NATO Medal, the Combat Medic Badge and the Driver and Mechanic Badge.

 

Bernier is survived by his mother, father, brothers and sister.
