10th Mountain Division Soldier killed in Afghanistan


Fort Drum, NY - A 10th Mountain Division Solider stationed at Fort Polk, Louisiana, was killed Wednesday, April 27 in Wardak Province, Afghanistan, when his unit was attacked with small arms fire.


Killed is Private First Class Jonathan M. Villanueva, age 19 of

Jacksonville, Florida. He was an infantryman with the

2nd Infantry Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division.


Villanueva joined the U.S. Army in April 2010, completed training at Fort Benning, Georgia was subsequently stationed at Fort Polk in October 2010. He deployed with his unit in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in October 2010.


Villanueva's awards and decorations include the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the NATO Medal.


Villanueva is survived by his mother and father.
