10th Mountain Division Soldier killed in Afghanistan

 

Fort Drum, NY - A 10th Mountain Division Soldier was killed in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan, Tuesday, August 23, when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device.

 

Killed is 1st Lieutenant Timothy J. Steele, age 25, of Massachusetts.

 

Steele was an executive officer with the 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team.  Steele received his commission in May 2009, after graduating from the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York.  Steele came to Fort Drum in August 2010.  He deployed with his unit in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in March 2011.

 

Steele's awards and decorations include the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the NATO Medal, the Air Assault Medal, the Expert Infantryman's Badge, the Parachutists Badge and the Ranger Tab.

 

Steele is survived by his wife, child, mother and father.
