10th Mountain Division Soldier killed in Afghanistan


A 10th Mountain Division Soldier stationed at Fort Polk, Louisiana, was killed in Wardak Province, Afghanistan, Sunday September 25 of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with a rocket propelled grenade.


Killed is 1LT Andres Zermeno, age 26, of San Antonio, Texas. He was a transportation officer with the 2nd Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division.


Zermeno joined the Army in November 2009. He arrived at Fort Polk in February 2010 and deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom with his unit in October 2010.


Zermeno's awards and decorations include two Bronze Stars, the Purple Heart, the Army Commendation Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the NATO Medal, and the Combat Action Badge. He completed the Transportation Officer Basic course.


Zermeno is survived by his wife, two children, mother and father.
