Fort Drum Soldier diagnosed with rabies

Fort Drum, NY - A Soldier assigned to Fort Drum was diagnosed with rabies on Friday, August 19, and is currently undergoing treatment.  Close contacts of this patient have been, or are being notified, to assess whether or not post-exposure rabies vaccination is required due to close

contact with this patient.

The Soldier did not contract rabies in New York State - rather he likely contracted the disease during a recent overseas deployment.

The Department of Defense, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, along with the New York State Health Department, are monitoring the Soldier's care.

Media with inquiries regarding Fort Drum and/or the Soldier should call Julie Cupernall, Fort Drum Public Affairs, 315-772-8286.

Media with inquiries regarding rabies and/or the prevention and treatment of the disease should call Tom Skinner, Senior Public Affairs Officer, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 404-639-3286.
