TAX ASSISTANCE CENTER

2012 Tax Season

In order to schedule an appointment, call 315-772-6727 after 1 p.m. the day before you would like an appointment. Because the appointment line is often very busy, we also will schedule appointments in-person at the Tax Assistance Center starting at 1 p.m. daily for a next day appointment.

Additionally, you may consult www.militaryonesource.mil for alternate free tax preparation materials.

The following documents are REQUIRED to schedule an appointment:

- Military ID (CAC);

- Social Security Cards for you, your spouse and dependents and/or a Social Security Number verification letter issued by the Social Security Administration (Your Military ID is not sufficient);

- Birth dates for you, your spouse and dependents listed on the tax return;

- Your Army W-2, available at www.mypay.dfas.mil (your LES is not sufficient);

- A voided check to receive your refund by direct deposit

There is no charge for this service.

A wealth of tax information can be obtained from the IRS website, at www.irs.gov, pertaining to both individual tax returns as well as specific military tax issues.  You will need certain documents to file your return. Most important are all W-2's, social security cards for yourself and all dependents, birth dates for you, your spouse and dependents, and if applicable, a special power-of-attorney authorizing you to sign a tax return, or an IRS Form 2848. If relevant, you should also bring either Form 1099 INT or DIV, mortgage interest statement(s), childcare information, IRA contributions, documentation of sale of stocks, bonds and/or mutual funds, alimony paid or received, and court orders for divorce and/or child custody and support. Without complete records, an accurate tax return cannot be completed and your tax liability may be higher.

*To file taxes electronically on a married-filing-joint tax return, both spouses must be present or have a Special Power of Attorney authorizing you to sign the return.
