Deputy Commanding General (Rear) / Acting Senior
Commander of the 10th Mountain Division (LI)
Brigadier General Michael L. Howard graduated from Mercer University in 1986, and was commissioned through ROTC. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Mercer University and a Master of Science degree from the National War College.
Brigadier General Howard served as a rifle platoon leader, scout platoon leader, executive officer and assistant operations officer in the 1st Battalion, 41st Infantry Regiment, 2d Armored Division, United States Army Europe, Germany and deployed in support of Operation Desert Storm/Shield in Iraq. After the Infantry Officer Advanced Course he was assigned to the 3d Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, Fort Bragg, North Carolina where he served as the battalion assistant operations officer and later Commander of Headquarters and Headquarters Company. Brigadier General Howard was reassigned to Fort Lewis, Washington, where he served as the personnel officer and later the assistant operations officer and B Company Commander of 2d Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment.
Upon completion of the Command and General Staff College, he was assigned to Fort Benning where he served as the Liaison Officer and Senior Operations Officer in the 3d Battalion of the 75th Ranger Regiment. Reassigned to Fort Bragg, North Carolina, he served in the Plans and Policy Directorate of Joint Special Operations Command. Brigadier General Howard was then assigned to Fort Drum, New York where he took command of the 1st Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, and deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. Upon redeployment, Brigadier General Howard served as the Assistant Chief of Staff, Division Operations Officer (Rear), of the 10th Mountain Division (LI). He then deployed again to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom where he served as Commander of the 3d Squadron, 71st Cavalry Regiment, 3d Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (LI).
After the War College, Brigadier General Howard was assigned to Fort Richardson, Alaska where he served as Commander of the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division and later deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. After Brigade Command, he was assigned as the Special Assistant and later the Executive Assistant to the Supreme Allied Commander, Europe/Commander United States Army European Command.
Brigadier General Howard’s most recent assignment prior to becoming the Deputy Commanding General (Rear) / Acting Senior Commander of the 10th Mountain Division (LI) was as the Director of Future Operations, International Security Assistance Force Joint Command in Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Brigadier General Howard has a number of awards and decorations to include the Combat Infantryman Badge (with star), Expert Infantryman Badge, Master Parachutist and Ranger Tab.
